To Administration and the Student Body,

As the Student Body President of Xavier University of Louisiana, I am writing this letter on behalf of the Executive Board and the entirety of our student body to express our deep concern and disapproval regarding the selection of the commencement speaker for this year's graduation ceremony.

It has come to our attention that the university has chosen to invite a UN ambassador who has voted against a ceasefire in Gaza to address our graduating class. This decision has sparked significant dismay and disappointment among us, as it contradicts the values and principles that our institution upholds. Xavier University of Louisiana has proven to be a beacon of social justice and human rights, and we cannot stand by in good conscience while actions that disregard the sanctity of human life are endorsed.

The recent events in Gaza have resulted in a humanitarian crisis of immense proportions, with countless innocent lives lost and communities shattered. As members of a compassionate and empathetic community, we cannot turn a blind eye to the suffering of our fellow human beings. The stance taken by the chosen commencement speaker goes against the very essence of our commitment to justice, equity, and solidarity with the oppressed.

We, the Student Government Association and the student body, vehemently oppose any form of genocide and violence, and we advocate for peaceful resolutions to conflicts around the world. Therefore, we urge the university administration to reconsider its decision and choose a commencement speaker who embodies the values of empathy, compassion, and global citizenship that we hold dear.

Furthermore, we call for a reevaluation of the process by which commencement speakers are selected in the future. It is imperative that the voices and concerns of the student body are considered, ensuring that the individual chosen resonates with the majority of our community and upholds the moral integrity of Xavier University of Louisiana.

In closing, we implore the administration to heed our concerns and take immediate action to rectify this situation. Let us reaffirm our commitment to justice and humanity and let our commencement ceremony be a celebration of unity, hope, and the unwavering pursuit of a better world for all.

Sincerely,

Chase Patterson
